Bridge Between Worlds
An invitation card design for a fictitious gallery exhibition featuring the work of illustrator Victo Ngai. This project features a drawing inspired by the Chinese creation myth, the Legend of Pangu. I drew the illustration in Ngai’s distinctive style.
Ngai grew up in Hong Kong and later immigrated to America to pursue a career in the arts. Memories from her childhood in bustling Hong Kong mingle with her experiences living in America much like yin and yang swirling in the cosmic egg from Pangu’s story. My illustration shows the artist riding a dragon-bridge from Hong Kong to New York City. Ngai wonderfully exemplifies “east meets west” and as a hapa or mixed race person, I resonate with this idea and strive to mix both eastern and western elements in my work.
The full illustration is split across three postcards, functioning like a triptych. This layout is reminiscent of multi-panel Asian landscape paintings, which inspire Ngai’s work. The postcards can also become fun collectibles in this way!
The back of the invitation includes information about the event and decorative illustrations.
Black and white sketch for the main illustration.
